Turning the Invisible in the Visible

Sometimes that overwhelmed feeling we have is because we feel stuck.

It's not visible to anyone; after all, we are getting a ton of things done.

But inside, we feel as if there is just...MORE to give and have.

I know I can't be the only one out there who feels that!

I mean, I had a great job, with a great boss, and job security like nobody's business.  And yet, I leave that and start my own company.

Even I look crazy to myself when I think of it that way.

But I did it and here's why.

I was reading an article today and part of it really resonated.  "When we are tired, it is most often a symptom of boredom. When no real challenge faces us, our brains relieve its natural tension and no longer pays attention and exerts effort."

This lack of energy is caused by a lack of challenge. I think it feels like you're stuck.

So if I'm to believe Mr. Robbins (and I do), this invisible feeling of stuckness (not a word as my spell checker is desperately trying to tell me), needs to become the visible by setting goals.

Why should we set goals?

This excellent article at MindTools says "Setting goals gives you long-term vision and short-term motivation. It focuses your acquisition of knowledge, and helps you to organize your time and your resources so that you can make the very most of your life."

Well that sounds pretty nifty! Sign me up for making the very most of my life!

But how am I going to do that?

Well, turns out the first step is creating what many call The Bucket List.  The article suggests setting Lifetime Goals in the following areas:

  • Career

  • Financial
  • Education
  • Family
  • Artistic
  • Attitude
  • Physical
  • Pleasure
  • Public Service

Step 2 is breaking down those lifetime goals into smaller goals with a shorter time frame.

In the article Golden Rules of Goal Setting, MindTools gives these five rules to set yourself up for success:

  • Set goals that motivate you

  • Set SMART goals

  • Set Goals in writing

  • Make an action plan

  • Stick with it!

Then, of course, there's the process of tracking, reviewing and modifying them as time marches onward. But we'll leave that for another post on planning!

For now, find some alone time and make your bucket list.  What do you want to accomplish before your time here on earth is up?
